Is it possible to sculpt drawings? Or, vice versa, is it possible to draw sculptures? Yes, if you are an artist or genius, and your name is David Moreno.

David Moreno

David Moreno is a Spanish artist, from Barcelona, who is recognized for an absolutely unique style of interpreting sculpture. His works, though physical, solid, and three-dimensional, appear to us as drawings, light pencil drawings on a sheet of paper. Their lightness, at times, makes them resemble quick sketches by an architect, or even those natural, free and intangible strokes with which we embellish (or sometimes torture) a casual sheet of paper while engaged in a conversation on the phone.

A staple of David's works are the houses, often simply made, thus to be understood more as a habitation, as a fundamental human element. Returning to the lightness mentioned above, we thus find ourselves observing houses, agglomerations or entire villages floating in the air.

A similar concept to the works of Cinta Vidal that we talked about a while back, in that case, the houses lost gravity, and a two-dimensional realization expanded into more than a third dimension. David Moreno's houses lose weight, and volume, and can flatten out on the wall, only to reveal their true nature when the angle of observation is changed by a few degrees. It looks like magic.

Three-dimensional structures are created through the joining and intersecting of thousands of lines, which by their thickening form the structure and image that reaches the viewer. Lines and structures represent buildings, but also the connections of their inhabitants, communities, and families. Lines that have an absolutely material nature: steel, wood, plastic and piano strings, these are the materials the artist uses. The monochromatic stroke further enhances the appearance of apparent simplicity and improvised sketching.

In other series of works, David has made sculptures focused on other architectural elements such as staircases, and doors, or made small pieces of jewellery using reductions of his works. By following his social media we can see how he is experimenting with his style in new forms, such as spheres.

Once again I like to talk about works and artists who manage to amaze me, make me stop, gasp, look, disbelieve, look again and finally give thanks for the beauty they give to the world. So look at these drawings and think that they are large agglomerations of steel, I bet you will find it hard to believe.
